CDV – Colonel Charles Pomeroy Stone, 14th U.S. Infantry.  Photographed as colonel of the 14th U.S. Infantry, by Fredericks, New York. The mount has some damage on two corners, but the image is very good.

Charles Pomeroy Stone (1824 – 1887) was a career Army officer. He served with distinction in the Mexican War.

Stone was reportedly the first volunteer for the Union army. In his first engagement of the Civil War, at the battle of Ball’s Bluff in 1861, was held for the responsibility of the Federal army’s defeat, and was arrested and imprisoned for 6 months.

Stone was later appointed Colonel of the 14th U.S. Infantry on May 14, and then promoted to  brigadier general in the Union Army that August, 1861. L ter his was ordered to the Gulf, and participated in the Red River Campaign, and again transferred back to the Army of the Potomac.  He had an interesting history as well after the war, recommended by Gen. Sherman to serve in training the Egyptian Army.
