British Military Waterbottle or Canteen Dated 1848

$650.00

British Military “Waterbottle” or Canteen Dated 1848. This style canteen remained in the British army for some time in the early 19th Century to mid 1860s.  Dated 1848 and Broad Arrow marked, this waterbottle could very well have been used in the Crimean War in the mid 1850s. The British Army had troops in several parts of the world as well as at home and Ireland, and Canada (militia).

There are references of blockade runners successfully reaching Confederate shores with a few crates of “British” canteen, and many Confederate collectors believe this type was used by southern troops. This might be an example to ad to the collection, but any like this canteen aren’t conclusively known to have been used by the Confederates. It is a fine example of what he British military used for a good deal of time in the first half of the 19 hundreds. For the canteen collector it is a worthy piece, complete with original stopper ( and section of the stopper strap), and lots of honest paint.

A well constructed canteen in very nice shape
