New York Navy Yard Leather Scabbard for the 1841 Naval Cutlass. Black bridle leather scabbard body with full length riveted seam, with attached belt loop. The “NY” on the belt loop is clear, and I’am sure that this is marked “Navy Yard.” What appears to be “C C  and a star: above all markings. There is a date below, but not clear.  My understanding that these scabbard are replacements made in the Civil War era.

Usually navy cutlasses were put away in racks, easy to get to in boarding situations, and scabbard were stowed away. Really the only need for scabbard in the Civil War era and earlier was for shore duty, and perhaps inspections. Salt air plays havoc with leather and any cutlass from any period is a good find, as many have none.

I have no 41 cutlass to place into the scabbard, and have no idea of how much shrinkage this piece has had, The leather seems rather pliable, and not to dryed.

A scarce piece; never one around when you need one.
