Description

13th New Hampshire Infantry – Band Document Lot. This lot contains two certificate signed by the attending physician, Adam Perry of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, attesting to the inability of William Critchley, Jr, the bandmaster of the 13th New Hampshire, making him unfit for military duty. The document was addressed to Captain C.E. Dutton, AAG. The first document is dated August 17. 1863, and another was made out on September 5, 1863.  (see photos for content). Both were signed by Justice’s of the Peace.  Critchley had enlisted in August of 1862, and transferred to another band, most likely the 3rd Brigade Band, 2nd Division, 7th Army Corps. (the CWdatabase says he transferred to the 24th US Infantry Band, but there was no 24th Infantry until 1866.

Included are two handwritten muster rolls for the band members of the 13th New Hampshire, made out prior to January 1, 1863 when Critchley transferred out to the new assignment. The two muster rolls are similar with little change to personnel. Many of these musicians began in the 13th and transferred out to brigade bands as did Critchley.  The only engagement with the 13th NH for Critchley would have been the Battle of Fredericksburg.

These muster rolls save a lot of research time coming up the the members of the 13th NH infantry band.

Very good + condition.
