Description
Charles Harris Greene, enlisted in the 4th Rhode Island Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant in Co. B, in Sept. of 1862, and remained with his regiment until mustered out on Oct. 15, 1864, at Providence, R.I. He had a number of assignments in a detached roll from the regiment during most of 1864, mostly as an act. asst. Inspector General on General Heckman’s Division of the 18th Army Corps.
He continued his army career with the 17th U.S. Infantry as a 2nd Lt. in January of 1867, 1st Lt. in November of that year, and captain in May of 1881. He retired an old army captain in 1896, and died in 1902. Most of his early service with the 17th Infantry was on the Frontier until 1880, when the regiment moved to Fort Thomas, Kentucky.
Captain Greene participated with his company “K” in both General Stanley’s Yellowstone Expedition of 1872, and the Little Big Horn Campaign of 1876. His company was most likely garrisoned at the Cheyenne River Agency for a good deal of the frontier service time.
The Cheyenne River Agency was established in 1869, near Fort Sully, DT (modern day South Dakota).
