The September date might have some association with militia units, being that time of year for annual Fall musters.

Description
1844 Dated American Military Silver Shooting Medal. This fine quality star shaped shooting medal with a finely engraved Federal eagle was, “Presented by the Officers to Company D. Sept. 1844.” On the reverse, “To be fired for Annually”. A bale made of the same material was used with either chain, or neck ribbon.
Being that it was presented in September, might lead one to believe that month was commonly the fall period for militia musters, but without known more, could very will be a regular Army unit.
The nice silver patina has been tampered with, where cleaning was done to read the engraving on the piece.
70mm point to point.
An original, and most likely, one of a kind.
