1860 Patent Model – William Lewis’ Method of Attaching Scabbard To Belt. The drawing copied from the original patents in the annual list of U.S. Patents for 1860 called this item “W. Lewis Sword Fastener, No. 26949, Patented Jan. 24. 1860.” “An Improved Method of Attaching Scabbards to Belts…” The invention consisted of a plate, diamond shaped that was attached to a belt or sash, and provided a button on the right side, that releases the scabbard. Note the small arm inside the “key hole” where the round or oval frog stud would be placed, and pulling the scabbard downward would be locked into place by this spring loaded arm. By pulling the button headed rod at the right the arm would recede and allow the scabbard to be removed.
Some of the original leather beneath the plate has been repaired, and some light damage remains. The original patent tag with string, shows a good amount of wear, but is legible. The scabbard came with this patent model, and I am assuming one of this type, if not particular one, would have been needed to demonstrate this model’s function.
The two pieces of paper beneath the original pieces are photocopied items.
A rare piece.
