Description
1870 Hoffman Frog With 1871 Remington Rolling Block Bayonet & Scabbard. Patented on 18 April, 1865, Col. Wm. Hoffman’s frogs were an improvement over the 1855 bayonets and early models. This “Hoffman Device” had fixed brass washers allowing partial rotation of the belt loop. The original Hoffman patent called had a full swivel frog with at times would cause the loss of the bayonet.
The metal scabbard is one of the late replacement types with the oval collar, made about 1898 for replacing the old warn out scabbards. Interesting that this Hoffman device was used on this late scabbard, and may suggest it was used by a state militia about the time of the Spanish American War.
The 1873 bayonet without a “US” marking may be for the Remington Rolling Block Rifle, a New York State contract in 1871, which goes along with the frog being earlier than the 1873 US regulation pattern.
Scabbard metal retains about 90% blued finish with some scratches and a few tiny areas of surface rust. The bright bayonet shows an untouched bright finish in patina. No visible markings on either bayonet or scabbard.
Overall Very good – fine condition.
