Description
1880 Hunting Knife & Scabbard.
This is a fine example of the 1880 Springfield Armory Hunting Knife, Model 1880. Numbered 564 in the bronze guard, and “U.S./Springfield” on the other side. The 8.5 inch bland shows only the lightest of use; basically light scuffing from wiping over the years, and very minor sharpened. The wool handle in in fine condition with no chipping on the pommel end.
The 1880 scabbard has been modified to the 1885 pattern with the addition of the brass equipment hook, introduced in that year for bayonet scabbard, hospital knife, etc., marked “R.I.A.” The leather in in very good fine condition show use, but stitching is tight, leather shows light scuffing, and a few areas of chipping along edges. The most wear is on the leather extension from the scabbard proper to the brass hook, showing wrinkling from the weight of the brass hook, pulling down as the knife is withdrawn.
A worthy example for the collection.
