Description
1880 Hunting Knife With Modified Scabbard, produced at Springfield Armory. Serial number 432. Marked “U.S. /Springfield” on the reverse brass guard. Wood handle shows light with a few nicks, mostly on the top of handle. The 8 3/4 inch blade shows very little use, with a bright overall finish. Unfortunately, some light sharpening has left some marks on both sides of the cutting edge. The marks I believe can be polished out significantly. Despite the sharpening, overall a very handsome example.
The leather scabbard is the 1880 pattern with the modification of adding the 1885 brass equipment hook, made by Rock Island Arsenal. Traces of the Watervliet marking are visible on the front side of the scabbard above the throat. Stitching is tight, leather has a few minor areas of crackled finish, but would rate as fine plus.
