Description
1884 Pattern Gauntlets ID’d To 2 Troopers – 14th US Cavalry. A nice pair identified to a trooper named “Coffey” written on the inside of one of the gauntlets, and Crabtree in the other, with the regiment and troop designations, along with his equipment number. Coffey was “35”, and Crabtree was “47”, both of D troop, 14th Cavalry. One or the other ended up using these last, who, only research can say, or for whatever reason, exchanged a gauntlet with one another.
The 14th Cavalry was established in 1901 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The regiment was stationed in the Philippines from 1903-06, then returned to the U.S. and served in the American Northwest. They were once again sent to the Philippines in 1909. The 14th later had duty on the Mexican Border, but this is about as far as I believe these gauntlets were used.
Size 6 marked, no contract dates which makes me think earlier usage. Light green buff color, with no a lot of wear, some stains, and overall in very good condition. Excellent display pieces.
