Description

3 Cabinet Photos Taken From Captain James Hope’s Original Paintings.

Captain James Hope, was commissioned into the 2nd Vermont Infantry in May of 1861, and resigned that December. He had taken part in a dozen of engagements prior to the Battle of Antietam, Md.  At the time of this last battle, he was disabled by illness and was assigned to other duties; among them scouting and map making.  Hope was a 43 year old artist when he enlisted in the 2nd Vermont, and was most able to sketch a series of drawings that later he made large oil paintings that he exhibited in his gallery in Watkins Glen, New York, in the 1880s.

After his death in 1892, the gallery fell into disrepair, and the paintings became damaged in need of restoration, and would eventually end up with the National Park Service.

While Hope was alive, he had these cabinet photos made which he sold in his gallery. There were originally 5 painting total. This lot consists of only 3 of those, BURNSIDES BRIDGE, BATTLE OF ANTIETAM, and AFTER THE BATTLE (Bloody Lane).

Each is 7 x 11 inches overall, and in very good condition. The back of the “After the Battle” image has a poem.

Enclosed with some research material on Hope, and his paintings.
