Description
Antebellum Era Ames Militia Officer’s Sword.
A gorgeous sword with nearly all of the original gilt remaining on all areas. Mother of Pearl grips with twisted gilt wire. Plumed helmet pommel which is linked to the double cross guard quillon by 2 strands of gilt chain. The counter guard uses extensions of Acanthus leaves.
The scabbard is marked, “AMES MFG. CO./ CHICOPEE/ MASS.” 2 upper rings on acanthus leaf mount, middle mount w ith acanthus leaf and a standing eagle in center medallion. The drag is plain. The scabbard has decorative panels on the front side, and none on the back. Some minor dings, etc.
A finely engraved blade has most of the frosty etching, with floral patterns on both sides; left side has crossed flags below a sunburst design, and the right has an eagle with the motto, “E. Pluribus Unum.” The Ames name is etched on the blade, and reads the same as on the scabbard. A narrow fuller on both sides that runs approximately 11 inches. Very light scratching in a few areas on the blade, but generally a choice blade.
There are crudely cut in initials “L T” on the back side langet.
