Autographed Card By Rear Admiral Charles Henry Davis, USN.  From the papers of Colonel John Smythe Schultz, 93rd Pa Infantry, and later transferred to the US Volunteer Adjutant General’s Department, (ADC).  Schultz of meeting with the higher ranking and influential had something to do no doubt with his becoming a politician after the war, and being a state senator in New Jersey.

Charles Henry Davis (1807 – 1877).  USNA Class of 1823 after 2 years at Harvard.  Career naval officer, and astronomer.  During the Civil War Davis was assigned to the Western Gunboat Flotilla as flag officer. Had several engagements on the Mississippi River, including he Battle of Memphis in June of 1862.  Worked with Admiral Farragut in operations against Vicksburg, and made a successful raid up the Yazoo River and destroyed a good deal of Confederate munitions and supplies. Shortly after this engagement, he was ordered to Washington to assume duty as Chief of Bureau of Navigation.  Promoted to Rear Admiral in February of 1863.

After the war he was superintendent of the Naval Observatory in Washington, 1865 -1867; them commanded the South Atlantic Squadron, and in 1869 returned to Washington to the Observatory and Lighthouse Board.
