Description

Owen Wister wrote this one page letter to Mrs. Oric Bates on mourning stationary, following the death of her husband, and his friend in October of 1918.

Oric Bates (1883 – 1918) was an American historian, and archaeologist (especially Egyptology). Bates was the son of Arlo Bates, American writer and poet. He was a graduate from Harvard, class of 1905; and was killed in a training accident at Camp Taylor, Kentucky during WWI.

The letter to Bates’ widow, Natica (Inches) reads, “My dear Mrs. Bates:   Alas, Sunday night I dine with two ancient pals of my youth. We shall toast the past in gruel, and swallow a little soft food carefully. Were not all my few nights filled with rehersing, or performing, or meetings pre-arranged, I should venture to propose another of these console me for Sunday.   With many thanks & regrets,   I am yours faithfully,   Owen Wister.

Saturday morning.”
