Description
These are excellent plates from an unknown book showing the process of making canteens circa early 1800’s. The title is CANTEENS, Manufacture Of, By Mr. Geo. Smart. The manufacturing process looks to involved for what was been done in America by most makers of canteens. The pictured canteen appears to be the type used by the British Army in the early to mid 19th Century; of hoop and stave construction, and usually banded in iron.
Most coopers in America did not have this machinery at their disposal, but certainly interesting to see this process in an old engraved style that is most suited for framing.
Some minor staining and soiling; each one measures 8x11inches approximately.
