Description
This is a scarce pair of Mexican War- early 1850s shoulder straps that belonged to Brigadier General Lansing B. Swan, or Rochester, New York.
The straps measure 4 inches in length by 1 1/4-3/8 inches approximately. There has been some slight restoration due to moth damage but of a minimal nature. The outer edges were hit the hardest by the pests. Paper backed. Gilt and silver bullion is in great condition and just lightly toned.
Gen. Swan was promoted in 1851 by Governor Hunt of New York, and and immediately assumed command of the 25th Brigade, 7th Division of the SNY militia. He was a major organizer of the military in New York at the beginning of the Civil War, but died suddenly in December of 1861.
More of Swan’s material is offered elsewhere on this site.
