Calling Card – Mrs E. Kirby Smith – Wife Of The Confederate General.
While recovering from a wound received at the 1st Bull Run battle, General Smith met his future wife, Cassie Selden, from Lynchburg, Va. They were married in September of 1862. After the war, Mrs. Smith went to Washington, D.C. to seek the pardon for her husband, who had fled to Cuba at war’s end. The Smith’s had 5 children, living in Tennessee, where the ex-confederate general had accepted an appointment as a professor at the University of the South, Sewanee,Tn.
