David Dixon Porter came from an illustrious naval family, being the son of David Porter, a hero from the War of 1812 days. In his early career, he commanded the USS Supply, and charged with procuring camels for the governments experiment of using that animal in the short lived U.S. Camel Corps.
During the Civil War, Porter commanded both the Mississippi Squadron, playing a major role in the fall of Vicksburg, and later commanded the North Atlantic Squadron.
