Description
George L.Gillespie, Jr. graduated in 1862, from the USMA at West Point, entering the Army as a 2nd Lt. of engineers. He was awarded the Medal of Honor on 31 May, 1864, when carrying dispatches for Gen. Sheridan during the Battle of Cold Harbor. Making sure that the chain of command remained cohesive, Gillespie, under intense enemy fire, and avoiding eminent capture by the enemy on two occasions, managed to pass on vital communications between Sheridan and his command.
