CDV- Commodore Hiram Paulding, USN (1797-1878). He was a midshipman during the War of 1812, serving on the Great Lakes, commanding the Ticonderoga during the Battle of Lake Champlain. Appointed by President Lincoln to assist in the building of a wartime fleet. Named by Secretary Gideon Wells to the Ironclad Board, which lead to the construction of the USS New Ironsides, Galena, and the most famous, USS Monitor.
