Description
General John Gross Barnard, was a U.S. engineer officer who took an active part in the planning and construction of coastal forts all along the eastern seaboard. He was assistant of the Chief Engineer of the Army, Joseph Totten. When the Civil War began, Barnard became the chief engineer of the Army of the Potomac under George B.McClellan.
In September of 1861, President Lincoln appointed Barnard to Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers, In 1864, he joined Gen. U.S. Grant’s staff, as chief engineer, and remained in that position all through the Siege of Petersburg, up to the surrender of confederate forces at Appomattox CH.
This officer’s history is extensive, and most worthy of looking into.
