Description
CDV – Henry M. Judah & Staff- Latter Part of the War.
this images shows Brigadier General Henry M. Judah, with his staff, presumably. He is seated on the left, next to a gentleman who appears to be in civilian dress, wearing european awards; perhaps a foreign observer. Judah is wearing a single breasted tailored jacket with rollover velvet collar, and cuff braid. Junior officers bracket a field grade officer standing behind Judah. The officers on the outside are wearing their rank on the shoulders without the shoulder straps, a latter war practice by federal officers, making themselves less obvious to confederate snipers.
There is no photographer backmark, and only marked “No. 2,” on the reverse.
Judah was graduated at USMA, Class of 1843, and a classmate of U.S. Grant. He saw service in the Mexican War, and in California, later becoming the colonel of the 4th California Vols at Fort Yuma. He had several commands during the war, but fell under much criticism for recklessness, and his drinking.
A nice scarce view with his staff. Needs further research.
Very good condition.
