CDV – Lieutenant Nathaniel K Reed 30th Massachusetts Infantry.

Nathaniel K. Reed, was a 23 year old merchant from Lowell, who enlisted into the 6th Mass Infantry, the first volunteer regiment to answer President Lincoln’s call for 75,000 volunteers to defend the Capital. He was mustered into Co. H,  and served for 3 months, mustering out on August 2, 1861.

In early November of 1861, Reed was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant into Co. D, 30th Mass Infantry. He rose to the rank of captain by February of 1862, and mustered out at Charlestown, S.C. on July 5, 1866.  He received a brevet major promotion at the end of the war.  He served with the 30th Massachusetts the entire time of service, first assigned in the Department of the Gulf, and then sent back east, and took part of operations in the Shenandoah Valley with the 19th Army Corps.  The 30th Massachusetts was heavily engaged at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Va, on October 19, 1864, with 18 killed, 108 wounded, 5 taken prisoner, and 31 missing.
