Description

Oliver Otis Howard was a career army officer, born in Maine, graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 1854.  A the start of the Civil War he was the colonel of the 3rd Maine Volunteer Infantry, and would lose an arm in the battle of Fair Oaks in 1862, having been wounded twice in that arm.  He would later receive the Medal Of Honor some time later for that engagement.

After returning from convalescents, he was assigned command of a Division in II Corps at Antietam. Later, at the time of the battle of Gettysburg, Howard had risen to Corps command (XI), and unfortunately received some criticism for his role their.  Shortly after the battle his Corps was transferred to the western theater, joining the Army of the Cumberland. By war’s end, General Sherman, after the March to the Sea, gave high praise to Howard’s service.

From 1865, General Howard was the commissioner of the Freedman’s Bureau.  During the Indian War, he went west to negotiate a treaty with the Apache Chief Cochise, fought against the Nez Perce, and in the early 1880’s returned east to be the Superintendent at West Point.

There is far more history about General Howard, but the nickname given him was, “the Christian General,” a fitting tribute to a fine military officer.

A fine quality image, which has a small hole in the paper above Howard’s head. The CDV was taken by Brady.
