Description

CDV – 2nd Lieutenant Lewis S. Chase, 24th US Infantry.  Signed on the reverse, “Sincerely Yrs / Lewis S. Chase / Lt 24th Regt. US Infty.” The full standing image of Chase is fully hand tinted.

Chase was with the 10th Maryland from 1864-65, and was later commissioned into the regular army as a second lieutenant in the 24th (Black) Infantry on March 7, 1867, and resigned his commission in April of 1869. Although Chase did not serve long with the 24th Infantry, if one were collection images of the early officers of that regiment, I would think his would be rather scarce!

Photographed by Herrick & Dirr, Vicksburg, Miss.

Very good condition.
