CDV – 2nd Lt. A. Piatt Andrew 21st Indiana Independent Battery. Signed on the back, “A.Piatt Andrew / 21st Ind Battery.”
Andrew served for three years from Indiana, leaving college to “join the colors” soon after the Civil War began, and at the age of 21 he commanded the artillery battery. He participated in the battles of Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. Andrew enlisted in September of 1862 as a 2nd lt. and attained the rank of 1st lt. and captain during the war.
His son, named after him was once the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury 1910 – 1912, founder of the American Field Service in WWI, and a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts.
