1st Sergeant Reed, of company H. went through Baltimore before reaching the Capital on April 19, 1861, the first regiment mustered after Abraham Lincoln’s call for 75,000 volunteers to suppress the Rebellion. The unit stayed in service 3 months, performing guard duty, etc, around Washington. Reed with the 6th mustered out on August 2, 1861.
On November 7, 1861, 2nd Lieutenant Reed, mustered into Company D, 30th Mass. Infantry. This regiment saw initial service in the Department of the Gulf, at battles near Baton Rouge, Siege of Port Hudson, and Bayou La Fourche, La., before being sent back to the east, seeing action in the Valley Campaign; Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, New Market, and Cedar Creek, where the regiment suffered 18 killed, 108 wounded, 5 taken prisoner, and 31 missing.
By war’s end, Reed had risen to the rank of captain, with a brevet commission to major.
