CDV Signed – Lt.Colonel Melvin Beal -6th Mass Infantry.

Melvin Beal enlisted at Lawrence, Mass as a 2nd Lieutenant, in the 6th Mass Infantry, and not until the 22nd of April did the regiment finally get mustered in.  The regiment left Boston on the 18th, and went through Baltimore on the 19th at the time of the Baltimore Riots. They reached Washington on the 19th, and were initially quarter in the Senate Chambers in the Capital. The regiment had guard duty in the Capital area for their 3 month enlistment, mustering out on August 2, 1861.

In September, Beal was commissioned into the 9 month regiment with the rank of Lt. Colonel. The regiment saw service in guard duty, and defense of Suffolk, Va. against General Longstreet’s confederate forces menacing that city and area.  the unit mustered out in June of 1862.

For Beal’s last mustering into the 100 day regiment, on July 20, 1864, the regiment had more guard duty around Washington, and at Fort Delaware, guarding 7000 confederate prisoners. They mustered out in October of 1862 at Readville, Mass.
