CDV- Signed Major General J.M. Schofield, “J.M. Schofield Maj Gen.”  The image was taken by Brady, published by E.& H.T. Anthony, New York.

A nice seated view of Schofield, who was a graduate of the US Military Academy in 1849.  He was promoted to Brig. Gen. early in the Civil War commanding U.S. volunteers. He served mostly in the Western theatre of the war, and was part of Genl. Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, and then fought with the Army of Tennessee. After the war, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek.  After the war, Schofield served as Military Governor of Virginia. In 1869, commanded the Dept. of Missouri.  Later commanded the Military Division of the Pacific. He would hold several other commands, and then appointed as the Commanding General of the U.S. Army (1888-1895). Was a major in the 10th U.S. Cavalry, and later the 6th Cavalry on the frontier.  The .45 Smith & Wesson revolver was named for him, when he suggested an easier method of leading for mounted troops, which S & W developed.
