This 1862 image of Cadet Peter Smith Michie, as a cadet is autographed twice; on the bottom of the mount “P.S. Michie U.S. Corps,” and on the reverse, “Peter s. Michie, Cincinnati, Ohio, July ’62. Taken by Charles D. Fredericks & Co. New York City.
Originally from Scotland, he entered service (appointed from Ohio, USMA Class of 1859. He was breveted for captain & major of engineers in Oct. 10 1864 for gallant and meritorious service during the campaign of 1864 against Richmond,Va.. Lt.Col. in April of 1865 for same, in the campaign terminating at Appomattox Court House, Va. and Brigadier General of Volunteers, on Jan. 1, 1865 for meritorious service in 1864.
He continued in the Army; was a professor at West Point 1867-69, part of the Coastal Fortification commission that went to Europe in 1870, and later taught engineering at Dartmouth College (1871-1901).
