Description
William Tisdale was born near Winchester, Va. in 1838, and would later settle in Iowa in the late 1850s. At the beginning of the Civil War he was serving in the Iowa Militia, and later enlisted in the 5th Iowa Infantry as a private on July 15, 1861. On September 19th, 1862, he was severely wounded several times during the Battle at Iuka, Mississippi. Tisdale transferred out on September 15, 1863 to the Veteran Reserve Corps, and was discharged shortly thereafter to take a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 60th US Colored Troops, in company “C.” He would later be promoted to 1st Lt. on May 9, 1864.
At the close of the war, Tisdale was detailed to service within the Freedmen’s Bureau at the White River District as a Superintendent, then being discharged on August 4, 1866.. A history found on the internet states he would be later appointed by General (later Governor) Clayton of Arkansas to be the Adjutant General of the state and state mustering officer. He became a brigadier general on the staff of Governor Clayton not long after.
The image of Tisdale was taken by C. Sellers, Keokuk, Iowa. and has a revenue stamp. The reverse is signed twice, first as “Willey A.E. Tisdale/ 1st Lieut Co. D 60th U.S.C.T. / Asst Pro Martial Little Rock / Ark.” Sometime later resigned in an upside-down fashion, “W.A.E. Tisdale/ Supt. of Freedmen’s / Little Rock/ Arkansas.
His history states he was much “disabled and incapacitated for manual labor”, and according to his history was wounded above the right eye resulting in the loss of his sight at the battle of New Madrid. At Iuka, received seven wounds within 40 minutes of the battle; twice through the lungs passing out under the right arm, once in the right foot and right hand, one in the right leg above the knee, breaking the bone, and one in the buttock. His action according to the history, was complemented by his old colonel, Gen. C.L. Mathias, and after all this was relegated to staff positions.
