Black buff belt is stamped with inspector and maker cartouches.
Civil War S.H. Young Contract Buff Belt & Buckle. Appears to be in unissued condition with age and storage wear only. A sweet example with both the inspector and maker cartouches, stamped on the leather just under the buckle. Contractor is S.H. Young, Newark, New Jersey.
If you look at the photo provided of the back of the buckle, you can see three markings in the lead, caused by the stacking of another buckle in the original packing of 10. A pair of buckles were placed on top of one another in reverse to conserve space, and not mar the face of the buckle.
Dark finish remains on the leather, backside leather shows age toning.
A collector’s painted inventory remains on the brass slide/ keeper.
