Civil War Souvenir Book- 136th New York Volunteers In Georgia.
The book, “Autobiography of An Actress; or, Eight Years On The Stage. By Anna Cora Mowatt. Boston; Tickner, Reed, And Field, 1854.” A well used, and worn book found by New York troops, and as recorded on the back of the inner flyleaf, “Savanna, Ga. Dec. 27th 1864, This Book was “captured” and presented to me on the 3rd day of December A.D., 1864, by Corpl Amariah Hammond Boylan, of the 136th Regt N.Y. Vol. Infty, Co,B, on Maj. Gen. W.T. Sherman’s great raid through Georgia, from Atlanta to Savana. He was captured by the enemy on the 5th Dec. and has not since been heard from. I keep this in remembrance of him, John C. Wheaton, Ord. Sergt. Co. B. 136th Regt. N.Y.Vol. Infty. 3rd Brig. 3rd Div. 20th A.C. Left Wing Army of Georgia.”
On the front of the same flyleaf, “To be sent to, Miss Hannah Lather, Danville, Livingston, Co, N.Y.” In pencil, below this is, “rec. this Saturday, January 7th, 1865.”
An ownership name is written on the same page, “Susan J. Anderson.” Interesting her name is Anderson, on a book captured in that general area.
John C. Wheaton, of Co. B., enlisted in August of 1862, and attained the ranks of corporal, sergeant and 1st sergeant by April of 1864. He was wounded in action at Bentonville, N.C., on March 19, 1865. Discharged May 31, 1865 from hospital in Rochester, N.Y. Commissioned, but not musteres a 2nd Lt., May 11, 1865.
