Description

Civil War State Contract – Id’d Mix & Co Drinking Cup. This cup was displayed in a G.A.R. hall at some point, the gift of Private Frederick B.St. John, Co, “I,”  34th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry. The cup was painted in gold and has the date 1861 on one side and crossed U.S. flags on the opposite side.

Although unmarked the cup was most likely made by the G.I. Mix Co., of Yalesville, Connecticut.

Private St. John served in the 34th NY Vols. from June 15, 1861 to August 1. 1861, He reportedly deserted at Great Falls, Maryland.

A small slip of period paper is made out with his name and unit, and came with the cup.

Ex John Henry Kurtz Collection.

The cup and paint are very good, overall  with a good deal of gold paint flaking, most of the date is visible.

Nice historic piece.
