Early Indian Wars Newcomb & Lyon 1867 Patent Cartridge Box. Designed to hold 30 cartridges in .50/70 caliber.  When the box flap is undone, the cartridges pop up for easier removal. See the photo showing brass spring like plate at the base of the tube that would raise the round. A steel spring was added to the center of the flag to keep it down in the covering position.  Inner box leather marked PATENTED 1867.  Never accepted for federal use.
