Description
This is an example of the Model 1863 artillery bit that was modified following the Civil War, by tin plating these bit beginning in 1868. Cast brass bosses like that on the M1859 cavalry bits were used on these in place of the intertwined “USA” type.
The front right mouth piece is marked “US.” On the left cheek piece is marked “U.S Watervliet” and “U.S Arsenal” on the right side. The bit retains over 50 percent bright tin mixed with toned metal finish. Brass bosses still have a good amount of original luster.
An excellent example.
