Ex Civil War Officer’s Business Card – Claims Agent.

A.C.H. Webster, late Quartermaster General’s Office, worked as a claims agent, to settle officer’s accounts, as well as offering to work with others regarding life and fire insurance claims. etc.  He maintained an office across from the U.S. Treasury Building, Washington, D.C. (this new address was made in red ink handwriting; his last address on Pennsylvania Avenue, across from Willard’s Hotel.

Company officers as well as other in charge of various positions had to maintain copies of all vouchers, receipts, ordnance and quartermaster issues, etc.  Many times officers were lax in properly taking care of their paperwork, and they could get into serious trouble over poorly maintained records.  Webster was one of the many who made a good living acting on behalf of these officers.
