First Day Cover Original Art C-1990’s, Joining Forces. Two soldiers with the American Flag and the Flag of U.S.S.R. in front of the Elbe River. On April 25, 1945, Elbe Day, American and Soviet troops met at the Elbe River in Germany, where a handshake made history in efforts to end the war.
