Description
Group of Four Massachusetts Volunteer Militia/ MNG Distinguished Marksman Medals. This is a collection in a sense of the first three versions of the MVM Distinguished Marksman medals, including one with the top bar, bearing the letters, “M.N.G.” for Mass National Guard.
- Type one; bronze medallion suspended from chain links with the top pin brooch bearing the name, “DISTINGUISHED MARKSMAN; the center has the great seal of Massachusett, Chief Massasoit. 50mm high.
- Type two; bronze star suspended from a single point with on link, “M.V. M.” on the pin brooch, “DISTINGUISHED MARKSMAN” circles the seal. Latin inscription on the reverse (part of the medal – not added.) 65mm high.
- Type three; bronze, same as above, but now another suspension being held by a maroon ribbon with gilt pin bar. 105mm high.
- An additional type three issued to Sgt. William Baris, 1st BG, 181st Inf. presented in 1962. The difference here is the replaced letters MVM for MNG, Mass National Guard. The presentation is engraved on the back of the middle suspension bar. Light bronze finish, and in original issue box.
The first three are not named or numbered.
A great -already assembled set of one of the highest shooting awards issued by Massachusetts to its soldiers.
