Description

Late 18th Early 19th Century Identified Engraved Priming Horn.

Made from cow horn Circa 1780-1820 using deciduous and coniferous trees, a deer, birds, fox, and a fence.  Obviously this priming horn was used by a hunter. Stylistically, all of the features engraved on the horn can be seen in later 18th Century horns.  The rounded wooden cap is held in place by wooden pegs.

The twine wrapped around the spout area, and the narrow sling are not original, and it has to be assumed the brass tack holding the sling may be period, but also not original to the horn. The plug for the spout appears to be and old and look right.

As the owner’s name goes, “S.B. CORDWELL” it is a real researcher who can get down to that information.

Size is approximately 6.5 inches furthest point to point, or 7.5 inches tip of spout to end of horn (not including the wooden cap).

Engraving is period, aging, and color are original.

A sweet little horn with a lot of character.
