Description
M1842 Aston Single Shot Martial Pistol- 1850 Contract, Made by Henry Aston, Middletown, Ct. from 1845 to 1853. .54 caliber smoothbore, 8.5 inch barrel, with brass blade front sight; “US /JH /over P on breech, and dated 1850 toward the tang.. Walnut stocked with brass furniture; inspector cartouches on left side. Lock plate dated “MIDDtn/ CONN/ 1850.” Forward of the hammer, “US / H. ASTON.” Other sub-inspector marks (“H”) appear on various other parts.
Mechanically sound, fine bore, and an untouched patina overall. The iron parts show the minutest of pitting. The stock has numerous dings, dents, etc. There is some heavier scuffing on the brass backstrap.
Overall a pleasing example of a pistol issued to U.S. Dragoons in pairs. Used occasionally by officers, as I have seen several engraved and presentation pieces.
