The Sheridan Metcalf Revolver belt model 1881 had a leather panel that held 12 canvas web loops for .45 Colt cartridges. This item was modified to hold 6 shotgun shells for the 1881 Springfield Forager, previously holding canvas loops for Colt cartridges. The leather is choice, still retaining the 4 brass eyelets that were used to run the leather thongs through to attach to the belt. The canvas is from a commercial shotgun belt and machine sewn inplace. The original holes for the revolver loops are visible.
This could have been used on the belt intended or attached to the eyelets on the Mills belts in later years.
A neat, and scarce soldier modification. Might have been used for more than just hunting game.
Fine + condition.
