Model 1839 White Buff Dragoon Saber Belt – SOLD

Model 1839 White Buff Dragoon Saber Belt, with original large oval “US” plate (leather backed to prevent lead staining the white buff, and rarely found on existing plates).  The belt shows the usual added adjustment holes, and has an overall age soiling. The “puppy paw” lead backed buckle has never been touched and has a rich patina with grime. The forward buff hanger is present, the longer rear hanger is missing. Shoulder straps for these are scarce, but occasionally surface.

The hanger is one inch wide, and regulation stated this was the original width for carrying the 1833 Ames Dragoon saber, which were later beefed-up to 1 1/8 inches for carrying the 1840 patter saber, a heavier saber.  Most likely, whatever width of hangers, all were eventually used with the Heavy Dragoon saber.

The forward chape for hanger and D-ring for shoulder strap are sewn down originally straight up and down, not at the earlier style angled forward.  The belt has been shortened a small amount done by the trooper.

No contractor marks.

A nice example.
