Model 1860 Mansfield & Lamb Contract Light Cavalry Saber. An 1864 dated blade measuring 35 inches and stamped on oval “MANSFIELD & LAMB /FORESTDALE, R.I.” and on the other side, “U.S. /J.M. /1864.” The blade retains a high percentage of its bright finish (looks much better than photos show), mixed with some age and blemishing. The brass hilt has kept its original shape; the pommel cap inspected by inspector “C.E.W.” The grip wire is original, and the leather shows some scuffing on high spots located more center.
The scabbard has several larger dings, one larger one having a opening at the sharpest point of the crease, overall a bit misshapen. Surface mixed with patina and old grime. Throat and drag stamped by blade inspector “J.M.” (just “M” on the throat).
A nice wartime issued and cavalry used saber that saw action in the Civil War.
