Rare Model 1872 Haversack with Sling – First Pattern -SOLD

Rare Model 1872 Haversack with Sling. This is the first pattern made of linen duck with the flap edge is bound with the same material measureing 1/2 inches (approx), and the flap is secured by a 3/4 inch web strap with three brass eyelets.  The interior has a compartment in the main partition for hold bread, condiments, etc.  On the outside of this is another pocket which holds the 1872 Meat Can. Unlike the following patterns, this haversack do not any means of securing it.  The Chamber’s pattern sling is sewn directly to the back of the haversack.

The haversack is ink marked in several places by the soldier; “E.H. 40,” assuming the 40 to be an equipment number. This marking appears twice on the meat can compartment, one the Chamber’s sling near the adjustment buckle, and a loan “40” on the main flap. The number can be eliminated as the haversack was issued after the Army consolidated the infantry regiment from 45 to 45 in 1869.

Condition is fine, with very little wear, and only some little staining on the sling.

This are not seen all that often.
