Description
A small document 7 inches square approximately, issued from the Headquarters Department of Texas to Pvt. Thomas Cox of Co. “I,” 19th Infantry. Dated, San Antonio, April 30, 1888.
The army had not put so much emphasis on marksmanship until the late 1870’s, and by the date of this document, the practice was common. However, like most paper items, it seems that few survive. I see this type of document very seldom.
The 19th Infantry was stations throughout the Department of Texas beginning in 1881, and were transferred to the Division of the Atlantic in 1890, after having served on the western frontier for 16 years. Signed by O.M Smith, 1st Lt. 22nd Inf., ADC, and Inspector of Rifle Practice, Dept. of Texas
Condition is fine. There are pencil scribble notes on the reverse.
This document is related to an appointment date 1897, 10th Infantry Corporal for Cox as well.
