A nice untouched example.
This M1855 Bayonet and its original scabbard are in very good and better condition. Both are untouched and retain their original patina.
The bayonet still retains a large amount of bright finish, with some surface rust over the blade, that is heavier in some places. The socket has a few areas where there is some pitting. The blade is at its original length of 18 inches.
The leather scabbard made of bridle leather is very good with wear overall the surface, running from smooth leather to crackled and some chipping of finish in a few areas, The center of the scabbard has been bent and this is where the scabbard shows the most wear. Although weakened somewhat, there is no danger of breaking with proper handling.
The bayonet tip has all but one of the original pins that hold it to the leather. Where the one is missing some lead was poured into that hold, and may be a period repair.
This bayonets fit not only the US Arsenal made rifled muskets, but the contracts as well.
