Description
This is the Bauer MK 2 Life Vest, that saw service into the Vietnam era. This one is one of the early style, lacking other pouches, etc. that were added on by the Korean War era. This one is the original type, all complete and other than showing good use, it’s in good shape. I bought this believing it was used during the late war period prior to the USS Hancock being decommissioned in 1947. The carrier was not recommission until 1954, and by that time these Mk2’s had been upgraded.
I don’t have the name for the individual, but the ship name is stenciled on the back with the number “58.” There are no other markings except for the labels stenciled on for what the various pockets contain.
The neatest markings are the 9 hash marks that may indicate various flights made, and doubt, but possible, the number of planes shot down?
The Hancock’s history is rather great for a late war carrier, and can easily be brought up on line instead of my editing here.
