Description

An eye appealing broadside measuring 7 x 12 inches approximately; printed on yellow stock, featuring a fine military vignette above the title, “A LIST OF ACTIVE MEMBERS OF THE SPRINGFIELD LIGHT ARTILLERY.” Members of the company number 47 names. A fine decorative border encompasses the body of printing, with the name of the printer, Republic Office print, at the bottom.

The vignette, using a panoply of arms, incorporates an eagle above, a militia soldier at attention with musket, and a State Seal within the shield at center; all appearing to be the style of a few decades earlier.

Taken from a brief history from Clark County, Ohio, this, along with two other companies were formed in the county in 1857, just a few years from the opening guns of the Civil War. A couple of men on the list became general officers during the war, including J.M. Dardorff, J. Warren Keifer.   General Keifer was a private when this company responded to President Lincoln’s call for 75,000 men on April 16, then formed into the 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Co. “D.” He was commissioned a major very shortly after mustering.

There are some light folds and staining, but most suited for framing. A nice historic piece.
